Melbourne Autumn Carnival
The Melbourne Autumn Carnival is held yearly between the months of February and March, right before the Sydney Autumn Carnival kicks into gear. While the Melbourne Carnival isn’t as big as the Sydney Carnival where the stronger horses are competing, the carnival still attracts quality horses in some very big races.
The Carnival is centred around three major racing clubs in metropolitan including the Melbourne Racing Club at Caulfield, the Victoria Racing Club at Flemington, and the Moonee Valley Racing Club at Moonee Valley. All Group races during the Autumn are held at these three racecourses.
The racing actually kicks off on New Year’s Day with the Group 3 Standish Handicap, while the first Group 1 race of the season is the Lightning Stakes n late January with the Lightning Stakes. The season really climaxes on Super Saturday at Flemington with three big Group 1 races in the Newmarket Handicap, Australian Cup and Australian Guineas.
