We’ve got an update from Betfair’s Matthew Thompson, on what promises to be one of the great races of the Autumn Carnival, The Newmarket Handicap.

Winners Market from Betfair

ALL SILENT $6
STARSPANGLEDBANNER $8.40
EAGLE FALLS $10.50
NICCONI $13
KING PULSE $17.50
TICKETS $19.50
WANTED $19.50
EL SEGUNDO $20
Others from $22

Best backed runners:

  • Starspangledbanner - Has been $9.20 into $8.20 since the barrier draw.
  • El Segundo – Was $60 into $26 in the ante post market, and has been $26 into $22 in final field betting.
  • Eagle Falls –  $11 into $10 since the barrier draw.
  • Tickets - $22.50 into $19.50 since the barrier draw.

Tips and comment by Betfair’s Mathew Thompson:

The Newmarket is certainly the most spectacular, but usually the best guess race of the autumn. It’s been made even worse by the barrier draw, where the favourite All Silent drew gate 17, and prime contender Nicconi 16, prompting suggestions that the field will split into two.

All Silent is the best sprinter in the race, but he get’s back and will need a tonne of luck here. I am also worried about his last jump out up the straight, where he was bloused by his rivals and struggled to stretch out.

I am leaning towards horses that will be on, or near the speed, and to that end I have to go with the second-elect, Starspangledbanner. He’s not been one of mine, but he gets the perfect run from barrier nine and will be at peak fitness for this.

This is such a great betting race that I plan on specking some other runners at odds. El Segundo is getting on but went like a train first-up under 63.5 kilos up the straight last prep. King Pulse, who’s been trained right up for this, ran a blinder in the Coolmore in the spring and another three-year-old, Trusting, could run well off a hot speed. He’s a freakish talent, and at $21 why not.

  1. Starspangledbanner
  2. El Segundo
  3. Eagle Falls
  4. Trusting

Denman will be all the rage

Denman will be all the rage

Betting markets for this Saturday’s Futurity Stakes and next week’s Australian Guineas have been shaken up with Lloyd Williams bypassing the Futurity with exciting colt Linton in favour of taking on Denman in the Guineas.

“With Linton out of the Futurity, Typhoon Tracy is now the hot favourite at $1.60 to beat the boys yet again at Group 1 level,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.

“Linton has been installed a $5 second favourite for the Guineas. Sportsbet have eased Denman out from $1.45 to $1.55 and former Guineas second favourite Set For Fame from $4.20 to $5.50.”

Prices are subject to fluctuation.

Blue Diamond Stakes Betting

The 2010 Blue Diamond Stakes will be run this Saturday at Caulfield and the fields have been announced. It is a very open field this year with no real standouts. Beneteau (3) has opened at $3.60 after two impressive wins to start his career. He won in style last Saturday at this track by two and a half lengths and the step up in distance will suit.

Star Witness (2) at $7.00 is another with 2 wins from 2 starts and will be looking to add to his one and a half length win a fortnight ago at Moonee Valley. Psychologist (13) at $8.00 is one of only three horses in the field to of won at Caulfield after a stunning four and a half lengths win here in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude on debut a fortnight ago. She looks the real value here.

Others that catch our eye are General Truce (1) at $26.00 who run second to favourite Beneteau in the Blue Diamond Prelude for C&G last start, and he won his two with ease before that, including a win in the Maribyrnong Plate at a whopping $61.00!! Can he repeat the dose? Succession (4) at $10.00 and Crystal Lily (11) at $9.00 also look like good place chances.

2010 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley

William Reid Stakes betting

William Reid Stakes betting

The 2010 William Reid Stakes will be run again this Saturday at Moonee Valley racecourse. The fields have been released and it is undefeated Black Caviar who is starting as a short priced favourite, $1.75 on early markets at Sportsbet.

This super young mare has won all of her five starts so far, but it’s the ease of which she has won which has really caught the eye. Four of her five wins have been over this distance and she has won twice at the Valley. Lightning Stakes winner Nicconi is second favourite after a stunning win last start. He has won two of three at the Valley as well as a third and will be tough to beat.

Others that look a chance to be in the money include Lightning Stakes runner up Wanted from the same stable as favourite Black Caviar, course and distance winner Light Fantastic, as well as Roman Consul winner Shellscrape, who ran an impressive third in the Lightning Stakes last start.

Group1 Lightning Stakes form guides, odds and tips

2010 Lightning Stakes Betting

2010 Lightning Stakes Betting

The Group 1 Lightning Stakes, the premier sprint race of the Melbourne autumn carnival will be run this Saturday and there is a great field. Some of the stars of the Spring are back in action for the 1000m race carrying $500,000 in prize money.

There are a number of strong chances, but we’ve narrowed the field down to a few who we fancy. Burdekin Blues is our tip, he should lead on the rail and will be hard to catch. He is a distance specialist winning 5 of 7 at the journey, including a second, plus knows how to win Flemington.

Favourite Starspangledbanner is resuming and has won 2 of 3 first up. This impressive colt was one of the success stories of the spring winning Group 1 Guineas, and has been in the money in every start at the journey. There isn’t much between Wanted and Headway from the Peter Moody stable with both expected to feature prominently. Shellscrape is a tough and underrated colt resuming from a solid spring campaign.

Denman v Carrara in the Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield

January 26th, 2010 Adam 1 comment
Denman v Carrara

Denman v Carrara

Two of the stars from the spring are racing head to head today in what should be a mouth watering affair. Denman, a winner of the Golden Rose will take on Stutt Stakes winner Carrara over 1200 metres. Kick off Australia Day in grand style on this race at Sportsbet!

Denman has been quoted outright favouritism at $1.68 at Sportsbet, with Carrara next best at $5.50 to win. The value could be with Carrara here who in fact ran second on this track in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, with Denman running a distant seventh in that same race.

That was Denman’s only start at this track, a track that Carrara performs well at. It is hard to split the two, but we think the value is with Carrara so will be placing some small stakes. Spacecraft ($31) may be value for the place, he beat Carrara in his last start, running second in the AAMI Vase.

Bet on the Zeditave Stakes at Sportsbet to get the best odds, or visit our detailed form guides for the race at this link. The race is at Caulfield, Race 5 at 3:24pm.

2010 Australia Stakes race preview at Moonee Valley

January 21st, 2010 Adam No comments
Australia Stakes Betting

Australia Stakes Betting

We have a cracking night of racing coming up on Friday night at Moonee Valley, with the feature race being the Group 2 Australian Stakes. Friday night racing at the Valley is always thrilling in this will be a fantastic way to warm up for some big races coming our way over the next few months.

This years Australian Stakes field is tiny, consisting of only six horses. Black Caviar ($1.45) is the raging favourite and rightfully so, after 4 wins from 4 runs. This distance won trouble her, having won her 3 starts from the distance. She was in sensational form early in the Spring before injuries cruelly cut short her campaign. It will be interesting to see how she hits back here after being drawn wide.

Here De Angels ($4.00) looks the closest danger and his form during the Spring suggests he will be a very good shot. Has won four and run a second in ten starts at this distance and knows how to win at the Valley. Coming off a 2 length win on Boxing Day at Caulfield and is hard to knock.

Of the others, Heart Of Dreams ($7.00) was a Group 1 winenr back in the spring taking out the Underwood, beating qulity horses such as Whobegotyou and Predatory Pricer. Struggled in it’s last start (Cox Plate) and is a previous winner first up.

Royal Ida ($15.00) won the Standish a fortnight ago first up at Flemington and has master jockey Damien Oliver on board and may be a good place chance. LA Rocket ($41.00) and Ferocia ($201) can be forgotten about, they have no hope.
