Chelmsford Stakes

The Chelmsford Stakes is a Group 2 race held as part of the Sydney Spring Carnival at Randwick racecourse, Sydney. It is contested over a distance of 1600 metres at weight-for-age conditions and caries prize money of $150,000.
As the Chelmsford Stakes is a weight-for-age race, trainers will use it as the ideal lead up race to the Group 1 George Main Stakes held later on in the carnival, a very popular race. Trainers also often use the Chelmsford Stakes as a lead up to the WS Cox Plate held during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Some of the greats of Australia turf have won the Chelmsford Stakes since it was first run in 1895, with recent names including Lonhro, Might And Power and Stargazer. Will the next great weight-for-age horse come via the 2010 Chelsmford Stakes?

Spotting Potential Winners
The G2 Warwick Stakes held a fortnight earlier is the ideal lead up race for the Chelsmford Stakes as it has produced tons of winners over the years. Lonhro won his back to back Chelsmford Stakes in 2002-03 coming via success in the Warwick Stakes.
Stay clear of 3-year-olds in this race. Only one colt or gelding has won in the past 30 years, while only one filly has one in the past 50 years. Don't be scared to back roughies either, Unearthly ($21), Brave Prince ($41) and Pasta Express ($21) has won at big odds in the past decade.
