Epsom Handicap

The Group 1 Epsom Handicap is held every October at Randwick racecourse and it is one of the biggest races on Sydney’s racing calendar. It is regarded as the premier handicap event during the Sydney spring carnival and it attracts some of Australia’s best racehorses. It is held over a distance of 1600 metres and is open to 3-year-olds at handicap conditions.
The Epsom Handicap was first ran in 1865 and some truly great horses have won this prestigious race over the years with notable winners including Racing To Win, Desert War, Shogun Lodge, Super Impose, Imposing, Chatham and Shannon. It was won last year by horse of the year Theseo.
Pay close attention to lead up races when trying to analyse the field in the Epsom Handicap. Races held several weeks earlier under similar conditions such as Tramway Handicap, Theo Marks Stakes and George Main Stakes have been a great guide in recent years. The Tramway Handicap was won by Rangirangdoo ahead of Strat’s Flyer and Murray’s Sun. The Theo Marks was won by Racing To Win (a past winner of this race), over Rock Kingdom and Triple Honour, while the George Main Stakes was won by Road To Rock over Black Piranha and Onemorenomore.
