Premiere Stakes

The Premiere Stakes is a Group 2 horse racing event held annually at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney as part of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. It is held under weight-for-age conditions over a distance of 1200 metres and carries prize money of $150,000.
The race usually attracts likely types, with horses who contested the G3 Missile Stakes held a fortnight earlier using making the progression on to the Premiere Stakes. It was first run in 1972 and upgraded to Group 2 status in 1997.
Trainers have been known to use this race as a lead up to Sydney spring races such as the G2 Theo Marks Stakes and the G2 Warwick Stakes.

Spotting Potential Winners
Look for runners coming via the Missile Stakes which is held a fortnight earlier. It's also a weight-for-age race, but the Premiere Stakes is 100 metres longer. This race is the best indication of form.
Trainer John Hawkes has also had a good time in the last few years in this particular race, so be sure to cast an eye over any runners he may have this year. Also, steer clear of any 3-year-old fillies, as none have ever won this race.
