St Kilda look set to bring back their inspirational skipper Nick Reiwoldt for the trip to the Gabba against the Lions. Brisbane are barely treading water with a number of key players on the injury list and will rely on their youngsters to get the job done.

Brisbane were flat last week as the Blues hammered them by 55 points at Etihad Stadium. With Brendan Fevola, Jonathon Brown, Jed Adcock, Matt Maguire, Josh Drummond and Jamie Charman all sidelined through injury coach Michael Voss has come under increased scrutiny for his recruiting strategies. The Lions have won just two of their last five encounters however those wins have been their last two matches at the Gabba, Brisbane will need to hope Brendan Fevola makes a return from injury to have any hope of kicking a winning score.

St Kilda continue to march on last week disposing of the Demons by 35 points in the twilight game at Etihad Stadium. Importantly for the Saints Nick Reiwoldt could make his return while Jason Gram and Justin Koschitzke are also in the mix. The Saints won their last encounter at Etihad Stadium by 16 points with Reiwoldt and Koschitzke both kicking four, with almost a full strength side the Saints should slip up against the Lions.

Conclusion

The Lions have fallen apart since round five and have failed to cover for the loss of key players, St Kilda have weathered the loss of Nick Reiwoldt superbly and look a better team for it, they should win by some margin.

I don’t think it matters that this match is played at the GABBA, the Saints can win anywhere these days and they won’t have any issues winning this match, considering Richmond were able to beat the Lions up here a fortnight ago. St Kilda v Melbourne

Melbourne will look to take on the almost impossible task of defeating the Saints at Etihad Stadium in the twilight Sunday game. The Demons have showed plenty this season and will be hoping the Saints physical encounter last week will catch the Saints off guard.

St Kilda turned last weeks game on its head against the Cats at the MCG on Friday night, down by 16 points at half time the Saints applied a strangle hold on the game to run out 24 point winners and in the process restricting the Cats to just three points in the second half. Unfortunately for the Saints tagger Steven Baker was contraversially suspended for four incidents against Geelong forward Steve Johnson, a move Saints coach Ross Lyon later declared was taken to far. Saints fans will have to wait another week for the return of Nick Reiwoldt however Jason Gram is set to return. As you would expect the Saints have dominated in recent years winning four of their last five encounters and they should be to strong against the young Demons.

Melbourne started the year as a real suprise to most but have since faded wining just one of their last five encounters although they did play out a draw against Collingwood. Last round they went down to the Crows by 44 points in a lack lusture performance. They will again be without skipper James McDonald while Col Sylvia continues to be hampered by a foot infection. The Demons have not beaten the Saints since 2006 and will need to put the Saints under pressure early to have any chance.

You would expect the Saints to win this game with ease, we expect the Demons to come out firing but again fall short.

St Kilda v Geelong

St Kilda take on Geelong at the MCG on Friday night in the most anticipated match of the season. It was Geelong that prevailed in one of the greatest Grand Finals in the modern era and Friday nights game is likely to follow a similar path.

The Cats get Cameron Mooney and Matthew Scarlett back from injury however Paul Chapman will miss with a hamstring injury.

The Saints will be desperate to perform in this game but the Cats are a formidable side, the Cats have to many attacking options and will just get over the line in a tight one.

Fremantle v St Kilda

Despite dropping last week’s game the Dockers will be back on home turf as they face a tough encounter against a Saints side that despite missing Nick Reiwoldt has performed above expectations with a makeshift forward line.

Fremantle fell victim to a Tyson Edwards inspired Crows outfit going down by 23 points at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Michael Barlow continued his stellar debut season with a best afield performance kicking three goals and having 32 touches. They go into the game against the Saints failing to win a match in their last five encounters however expect the Subiaco crowd to be an influential factor in this game. Fremantle ruckmen Aaron Sandilands could be the most important player giving the Dockers midfielders first use of the footy and more importantly reducing the impact of the Saints ball winners.

St Kilda took care of a young Richmond side by 38 points with Brendan Goddard best afield with 38 touches while goal sneak Stephen Milne chipped in with five goals. The Saints were pushed by the Dockers back in round 4 winning by 15 points with Brendan Goddard kicking five goals. They have played well at Subiaco in the past but will need Justin Koschitzke to find some form if they are to get up on the AFL’s largest ground.

Big ask for the Saints to win this one, Fremantle need to bounce back after last week and will gain confidence knowing they pushed the Saints earlier this year.

Tigers v Saints

Richmond go into Friday night’s clash against St Kilda full of confidence after an inspiring win on the road in terrible conditions at AAMI Stadium. The Saints continue to hang on to the top four despite their lack of forward options.

The Tigers belted out the song last week in passionate style after a 47 point belting of Port Adelaide in monsoon like conditions. Forward Jack Reiwoldt continued his impressive form kicking four goals while Dustin Martin collected the round ten rising star nomination after a stellar game. The Tigers broke the all time record last week with 142 tackles, they will need plenty of this to break an eleven game losing streak  against the dominant Saints.

St Kilda continues to solder on despite a forward line without Nick Reiwoldt and inconsistent Justin Koschitke failing to fire. Last week they disposed of the Crows in a dominant last quarter with midfielder Leigh Montagna racking up 38 touches and kicking 5 goals. The Saints haven’t lost to the Tigers since 2003 and you would suggest things are not going to change anytime soon.

The Tigers will no doubt have a crack in this one but the Saints are polished outfit despite their forward line concerns and will get the job done.

Saints v Crows

St Kilda host Adelaide at Docklands on Saturday night on the back of another horror week for the Saints with their players again in the media while for the Crows veteran Tyson Edwards has walked out on the Crows after being dropped for this week’s game.

St Kilda continue to limp on this season but will be boosted by the sights of their Skipper Nick Reiwoldt jogging laps around Morabbin for the first time since suffering a severe hamstring injury. After two disappointing losses the Saints rebounded last week to defeat the Eagles. For the Saints they have won their last four against the Crows but again will need to mix their forward line around to kick a winning score.

Adelaide looked a far better side last week defeating the Lions by twelve points however things are seemingly unstable with veteran Tyson Edwards walking out on the club over selection issues. Skipper Simon Goodwin has announced his retirement at the end of the season and will be desperate for one last crack at a finals campaign.

Will be interesting to see how both sides react to another week in the spotlight, Adelaide have plenty to play for while the Saints need to keep in touch with the top four and play their best footy under the roof at Docklands.

St Kilda v Carlton

The AFL’s experiment on Monday night has St Kilda taking on Carlton at Docklands in a matchup of two teams with contrasting styles, the Saints a strong defensive game style while the Blues will look to attack and create space for their small forwards.

St Kilda made the great escape last week in a low scoring encounter against the Bulldogs on Friday night, it was a game that was heavily criticized for flooding and defensive tactics with just thirteen goals being kicked for the match

According to St Kilda Coach Ross Lyon his side will continue to ‘Scrap’ in the absence of Skipper and key forward Nick Riewoldt. Jason Gram is a likely inclusion after two weeks out with a hip injury while Justin Koschitzke’s input will be monitored as the Saints search for attacking options with Ross Lyon hinting that Zac Dawson could make is way forward. Even without Riewoldt you would expect the Saints to get over the Blues.

Carlton lead a spirited fight back against Collingwood last week only to run out of gas in the last quarter as the Magpies run rampant in the last to win by 53 points. Skipper Chris Judd was again exceptional with 37 touches while Marc Murphy provided plenty in the midfield and up forward with three goals.

The Blues have not beaten the Saints in twelve games with Coach Brett Ratten declaring his side would need to overcome the Saints ‘strangulation’ style of footy. The Blues are likely to bring back the experienced Jarrod Waite and Brent Thornton.

Hard to see the Blues breaking such a long drought against the Saints, they will take confidence out of beating last year’s Premier Geelong two weeks ago despite being huge underdogs, without Riewoldt this is their best chance but the Saints are a quality side and wont lay down.

Bulldogs v St Kilda

In a replay of this years Nab Cup Grand Final the Bulldogs will be out to inflict further pain on a Saints side that has been hit hard by injury, question marks have been asked of the Saints forward line with big man Justin Koschitzke needing to fill the void left by Saints skipper Nick Reiwoldt.

Western Bulldogs were dominant last week against a poor Crows outfit winning by 51 points with Barry Hall causing the bulk of the damage with five goals. They will again back themselves despite their last win against the Saints dating back to round 3 2008, they did however defeat the Saints in this year’s Nab Cup grand final.

Barry Hall’s return to football has so far been a success with Hall kicking 19 goals in five games and currently running second for the Coleman Medal. Also in the mix to return from a hand injury is last year’s best and fairest Matthew Boyd. The Bulldogs will look to exploit the Saints lack of goal kickers, if they can contain Justin Koschitzke they should win.

St Kilda doesn’t look the same team without skipper Nick Reiwoldt and this clearly showed in their loss to Port Adelaide in difficult conditions at AAMI Stadium. The Saints are lacking tall targets up forward with Koschitzke not worrying the scoreboard against an inexperienced Port backline.

Importantly injured skipper Nick Reiwoldt has kicked 15 goals in the last 4 games against the Bulldogs and with the injured Jason Gram in some doubt as well their saving grace may be a return to a dry Docklands Stadium.

Although the Saints have only lost one game for the season and have an impressive record against the Dogs winning their last 3 season proper games the Bulldogs look to be in better form and have better attacking options than the Saints

Port Adelaide v St Kilda

Port Adelaide was humiliated last weekend and will need to bounce back against the competitions top side in St Kilda. It is a tough ask for the Power who were hammered in last year’s encounter by 66 points on their home turf.

Port Adelaide will need to move on quickly from last week’s 95 point belting by the Cats. Despite being within 10 points at half time the more experienced Geelong side pushed away the power in the second half winning every statistic on the board. The loss was so disappointing only two Port players were named amongst the best. This week doesn’t get an easier with St Kilda looking to continue its unbeaten season.

Despite a poor loss in their last encounter the Power have won two of their last five against the Saints with experienced players Kane Cornes, Chad Cornes, Dom Cassisi, Warren Tredrea needing to lead from the front.

St Kilda took on the Dockers in a match that matched up to expectations with the Saints winning by 15 points. They also showed they are a team to be feared kicking 16 goals without their two key forwards Nick Reiwoldt and Justin Koschitzke. Brendan Goddard drifted into the forward line kicking five goals while Stephen Milne did likewise kicking five.

This week they welcome back Justin Koschitzke from suspension and he will need to fill the void of 4 goals that Reiwoldt kicked in their last encounter at AAMI Stadium.

After the Cats delivered a thumping to the Power last week one could be expected the Saints will do the same, with a home crowd behind them the Power will give themselves more hope but they lack enough quality players to covers the Saints stars.

St Kilda v Fremantle

Amazing to think both sides go into this game unbeaten considering the Saints are missing a number of key players and the Dockers struggled for much of last season.

St Kilda won last week but the cost was huge with skipper Nick Reiwoldt suffering a severe hamstring injury which will see him miss up to 16 weeks. Sam Fisher also suffered an ankle injury and Lenny Hayes a broken nose in a bruising encounter against the Pies although both have been listed to play.

Brendon Goddard looms as a likely saviour up forward while surprisingly young forward Rhys Stanley has been named as an emergency with Clarke Raphael Clarke replacing Reiwoldt. The Saints will be hoping an impressive home record against the Dockers who are yet to win at Docklands will continue but they will need to change their game plan without their inspirational skipper and second tall Justin Koschitzke.

It wasn’t long ago Mark Harvey was in the firing line as the next coach to be sacked, footy is a strange game, the Dockers are second on the ladder after last week defeating last year’s premier Geelong, have unearthed a wealth of talent including mature recruit Michael Barlow who was tagged by Cameron Ling in just his third career match.

The Dockers seemed to have turned a corner and according to coach Mark Harvey obtained their licence last week against the Cats, importantly Chris Tarrant returns to cover the injured Nick Suban, can they chalk up a fourth consecutive with this season and their best start since they entered the competition in 1995 and importantly have their first win against the Saints since round 9, 2007?

Everything points to a Dockers win in this game but can they continue to play their attacking high pressure game style against a proven, yet battered and depleted Saints side. Would be a brave bet going against the Saints.
